Campbell River Hospice Society Board Advisory Members

Helen Garson

Helen Garson was a GP in Campbell River for 25 years, retiring in 2007. Since 2000 she incorporated providing Palliative Care as part of her practice and in 2003 became a GP in Oncology supervising the chemotherapy unit in Campbell River Hospital.

She had connections with CR Hospice Society as part of her Palliative Care work and always appreciated everything that the Society and its volunteers could offer, sending many patient referrals for their help.

She became a Board member of the Society in 2010 and, although she resigned earlier this year, she has been elected as an Advisor to the Board.

Garth Sheane
Garth and his wife, Judy, moved to Campbell River from Calgary in 1989 to take up the reins of the CEO position for Evergreen Savings Credit Union. In 2005, Garth led a merger of three credit unions, which included Evergreen Savings, to form Coastal Community Credit Union. He was President and CEO of that organization for four years prior to retiring in 2009.

Both during his working career and after retirement, Garth has been active in a number of board directorships, including 9 years on a deposit insurance board, 3 years with Nature Conservancy of Canada (BC board), and 7 years as an independent director on a First
Nations Trust. He also chaired a health council for several years in Campbell River.

Garth holds a Chartered Director designation from McMasters University, and counts governance as one of his business passions.
As a post-retirement activity, Garth has looked for opportunities in business mentoring. He has mentored several senior management people under the National Credit Union Mentoring program. As well, he is a mentor for Executive Mentors (Toronto) and is currently working with one client.

Garth hopes that his background can bring added value to the leadership of the Hospice Society here in Campbell River.

Campbell River Hospice Society Board of Directors

Geri Arkell – Board President

“I have been retired for 5 years from a rewarding career as the Oncology RN in our community hospital, where I was able to refer many of my patients and families to the amazing service offered by this Society.

I have enjoyed my connection with Hospice and have been one of the Hospice Advance Care Planning facilitators, as well as being a busy GG, wife and mom."

Leslie Palmer - Board Secretary

In May 2014, I moved to this beautiful city from North Vancouver and have been on the CRHS Board of Directors since January 2016.

I worked at BC Hydro for 32 years as an Administrative Assistant to the Executive Vice-President of Finance & CFO (for many years) and later to the Executive Vice-President of Legal.  In 2007 I resigned to be caregiver to my husband, who passed away in January 2009 from terminal cancer.

The greatest pleasures of being on this Board is that hospice/palliative care is very 'near and dear to my heart' and also the overwhelming feeling I have that I am giving back to this wonderful community.

Camilla Rosnes-Cockburn – Director

Camilla has worked in accounting for over 15 years. She has a keen interest in helping others, with a sense of volunteerism instilled in her at a young age.  She developed a passion specifically for hospice while caring for her parents.

Camilla completed the hospice volunteer training in 2016 and became a member of the board in January 2017.

Shannon Brown - Director

Shannon Brown, MBA, is the Human Resources Manager at Cermaq Canada. She is a long time resident of Campbell River. She believes this is one of the most compassionate and connected communities in Canada.

Her Board experience includes an interprovincial training society and the local Community Foundation holding the positions of Chair. At Cermaq she is a member of the Sr Management team and Global Functional Team with her peers in Chile and Norway.

Shannon travels annually to East Africa to continue work on a microfinance project for women which she started. When not in the office or on another continent she can be found mountain biking the trails in the beautiful North Island.

Bruce Wood – Director

Campbell River Hospice Society welcomes Bruce Wood to the Board of Directors. A resident of Campbell River since 1977, Bruce has worked as a family doc for 33 years.

Kathy Morrison – Director

Campbell River Hospice Society welcomes Kathy Morrison to our Board of Directors! Kathy says: I am a big believer in giving back to the community where I have lived for the past 38 years.. As owner of Something Special Gifts and the help of our staff and customers, we raised thousands of dollars for some of the community's non-profit organizations. I am very excited and thankful to have this opportunity to share my business skills and previous volunteer board and fundraising experiences, as CR Hospice has always been near and dear to my heart.
